Copywriting: The Art of Selling through Words

I have been a content writer for more than 8 years now but it wasn’t until 2016 that I discovered what Copywriting was.

Poetry wasn’t really my thing. Moreover, I preferred writing social media ads, posters and business brochures more than basic poetry.

I wanted to write but not what every other person was writing around me on social media.  I nearly accepted that I could never have writing as a career because I couldn’t write what others were writing.

But then I came across Copywriting…

It felt like I hit a jackpot.

I could follow my passion while earning a decent amount of money? Seems Perfect!

So what exactly did I discover?


In my own definition, I call Copywriting – The Art of Selling through Words.

It is only a collection of words – a thread that fits perfectly into the eye of the needle. But it is one STRONG component that can bring unbelievable sales of your product or even traffic to your website.

According to Wikipedia, copywriting is the act or occupation of writing text for the purpose of advertising or other forms of marketing. The product, called copy or sales copy, is written content that aims to increase brand awareness and ultimately persuade a person or group to take a particular action.

It is GOOD copy that makes you trust and buy from a brand. 

Can you believe it? We’ve all fallen prey to a good copy at some point. 

Think of that one brand you like because of their ads.

Yep. That’s exactly the brand that has you hooked through a good experience and a good copy.

There’s a HUGEE difference between a content writer and a copywriter.

Even though a content writer is important to boost engagement and keeping your audience hooked to your brand, a copywriter is essential to your business to convey the story of your brand and build brand value.

You need a copywriter for several components of your brand – for the sole purpose of getting your audience to take a single action.

A copy is written strategically to get your buyers to take a desired action.

It could mean creating scarcity to get them to buy from your brand, or email sign-ups to your website. The list is endless.

There is so much more to copywriting than what you see. 

As a former content writer, I can tell you that making this switch in my profession helped me find my true potential. I realized that I was never meant to write words without strategy and psychology implied.
