Finding a profitable freelance copywriting niche that goes with your interests can seem a little daunting at first.

I’ve been there too. And that’s exactly why I’m going to break down a few points to consider if you’re looking for a copywriting niche that could possibly change the course of your freelance copywriting career.

Read First: What is a Copywriting Niche?

How to determine a good Freelance Copywriting Niche?

Most good copywriting niches aren’t really the ones at the top. It all depends on trends and world affairs and unfortunately, those are unpredictable. So, you might want to research and find your answers to these questions:

Is this copywriting niche sustainable for me?

First of all, you need to find out if this industry or niche sparks interest in you. Or go for niches that you already know a thing or two about. One great way to figure out your true interest is by consuming content around it. Read books, blogs, and watch videos to understand the industry. If it’s uninteresting, it is likely that you won’t be able to last long in this niche industry. Keep switching and understand what works best for you.

Just as Wave suggests:

“Certain types of writing might pay well, but if you hate doing it or you find it incredibly draining it won’t actually be profitable for you long term. If your work is leading to burnout, it’s not sustainable.”

Is this copywriting niche industry profitable in the long run?

Avoid targeting a broad category (like a whole industry) for your career. Get as specific as possible while also keeping your potential client’s budget in mind. This helps ensure low competition and high income due to your specialization. You may also drive your rates higher when you bring in sales like nobody else!

You must also avoid saturated markets. When the demand is high, writers drive their rates down to win the gig.

So if you want to maximize your income, go where the money is — businesses with a considerable marketing budget and specific niche industries.

Example: Instead of targeting the whole eCommerce industry, you may go for product manual specialization.

Do I have the skills required in this copywriting niche industry?

Some industries might require special skills that may not be a part of just persuasive copywriting. For example, there is a high demand for copywriters who understand search engine optimization (SEO writing). But there aren’t as many content writers or freelance copywriters with this technical skill, so the pay for SEO writing is higher.

What writing niche to choose for copywriting?

Copywriting niches is a broad term itself. For easy understanding, let’s divide it into two.

The type of copy or the niche industry you write for.

Let’s begin by exploring the type of copy you can write as a freelance copywriter.

1. Long-form Writing

Long-form writing material is highly in demand and preferred by various big industries. Long writing includes complete comprehensive guides, detailed how-tos, and numerous helpful tips and tutorials.

Moreover, there are plenty of blogs that solely depend on long-type posts.

Unlike short blog posts (up to 500 words), long blog posts can provide detailed information on a wide subject in one long article. The challenge of writing a long blog post is to make it so interesting to read that the reader sticks to the post till the end. If you’re a persuasive copywriter, this is a great choice for you.

Plus, SEO writing can prove to be the cherry on top for long-written pieces.

The best part about this content type? Businesses have a never-ending need for blogging content, which creates ongoing demand. And the loyal ones (retaining clients) keep coming back for more.

2. E-books

E-books are the need of the hour for many businesses right now. They are used as informative marketing tools to generate leads and set authority in the market.

Most E-books are 5-10 page long PDF files with infographics that can present useful information easily.. Unlike long blog posts, e-books can be accessed offline after downloading and provide lots of value in a short read.

If you’re good at understanding and presenting concepts, then you might want to consider writing e-books. Most companies pay well for e-books, ranging from $250 to $1000 or more depending on the word count and client budget.

Moreover, e-books are lead magnets for your clients. So it can ultimately pay well depending on how much research and words are put into it.

Quick advice: Finance and SaaS niche industries are your go-to freelance copywriting niches in 2022 for e-books – especially if you’re deep into money management or problem-solving software.

3. Technical Writing (White Papers)

Technical writing is a freelance copywriting niche for analytical writers. Since technical copy is mainly for B2B companies, the copy tends to be more formal, heavily jargoned, and specific to the problem they are solving.

One of the many technical writing deliverables includes White papers.

White Papers are useful tools that provide valuable information.

But there’s more to it…

B2B copywriters need to demonstrate how this solution solves a problem better than anyone else. Furthermore, white papers provide valuable resources that readers can call upon to help them understand the wider problem and use it to gather insights about how to solve the problem within their company.

Writing a white paper is challenging. A good white paper is an ultimate mix of facts, figures, graphs and anecdotes that solve a problem.

There aren’t many freelance copywriters who are qualified to write copy for white papers. So if you have few journalistic skills – researching, presenting facts, smooth and engaging writing, you should go for this freelance copywriting niche. An average white paper can earn up to $4500, according to research conducted by Demodia.com.

4. Case Studies

A case study analysis requires you to investigate a problem (mostly business-related), examine the alternative solutions, and propose the most effective solution using supporting evidence.

So if white papers seem too complex, you can opt for cases studies.

A case study is a research method to gain a better understanding of a subject or process. They involve in-depth research into a given subject, in order to understand its functionality and successes.

As well as being valuable marketing tools, case studies are a good way to evaluate your product as it allows you to objectively examine how others are using it. It’s also a good way to interview customers and collect feedback on your products.

 5. SEO Copywriting

SEO Copywriting blends two important marketing tools and helps in creating the best content on the web.

There are several types of SEO content you can produce and use your good copy skills to find your copywriting niche

And while you are learning to Copywrite, you can level it up by learning SEO. Because SEO copywriters are in high demand right now. With the growing amount of social media users and digital marketing, brands are looking for copywriters who can do SEO and make them rank higher and reach the right audience.

If you’re up for it, you can level up your copywriting skills and provide high value to your clients and audience.

6. Sales Pages / Landing Pages

If you’re a copywriter, you are definitely aware of a Sales Page and Landing Page.

A sales page is where your leads are directed to when they want to buy from you. Leads approach you from an ad or a link – nonetheless, it is a powerful tool that needs to be written with strategy and persuasion sprinkled all over the copy.

The amount of time a sales page can take to write differs on what the product or service is. But most copywriters take up to 2 weeks to complete.

7. Video Script Writing

We know it… Video is the FUTURE of all media.

Whether it is an introductory product video or an educational YouTube video, every video needs a well-written script to make its content easy to understand.

So if you’re a naturally good speaker and presenter, you can write it for social media creators or even instructors who need a helping hand in compiling and arranging their important pointers correctly.

This is one of the easiest freelance copywriting niches, in my opinion.

8. Website Copywriting

A website copy has a never-ending demand in freelance writing. There will always be new businesses who need a website copy written or re-written – in case of rebranding.

Finding clients locally can also land a few retaining clients for digital marketing or other writing services.

Writing a website copy involves understanding the business mission, goals, and who their audience is.

You can always ask for a brand style guide and refer to it for writing the copy that aligns with their brand voice.

9. Ghostwriting (Book Writing)

Ghostwriting is a hidden gem in the world of freelance copywriting niches.

It is the writing of anything but the credits belong to the person or the entity that hired you.

Basically, you write for someone else and get paid for it – but in return, they own the credits of the work.

Many people – who aren’t good writers – hire a ghostwriter to write the book for them and pay them fairly well.

The list includes tech and business people, celebrities, and influencers, etc.

So if you’re a writer from heart, you can look for ghostwriting projects.

The best part about Ghostwriting is, you can be a freelance writer and earn a decent amount of money doing what you love and putting your art, your writing work in front of the world.

Ghostwriting is also a go-to niche for journalists and copywriters who love side-hustling as freelance writers.

So if you’re a copywriter and love writing fiction or non-fiction, you can try it.

 10. Social Media Copywriting

Copy is needed everywhere. And social media is the perfect example of this.

As brands have taken to social media for marketing, the demand for social media copy specialists has risen, too.

Nobody would’ve guessed it 10 years ago while using Hotmail but here we are.

If you’re a persuasive copywriter and an expert in sales – social media copywriting is for you.

You can write captions, graphic design copy, bios, about and so much more – depending on the social media you wrote for.

Quick tip: Research each social media and its functions before getting to write copy for it.

For example, links don’t work in captions for Instagram. But they do work on Facebook.

Twitter is more text-friendly than Instagram.

11. Course Writing

Just as online education platforms like Udemy, Skillshare, and Teachable are growing rapidly, educators might appreciate your help as a copywriter to sequence their study material to make it comprehensive and easy to digest.

If you’re analytical and passionate about learning and writing for a specific topic, you can really enjoy doing this without getting bored and learning new things on the way.

12. Email Writing

Every business needs promotional content but emails are evergreen. According to Hubspot, 78% of marketers have seen an increase in email engagement over the last 12 months.

So it is safe to say, Email marketing is the single best way to market or promote a brand in 2022. And these businesses need your services.

If you know how to grab attention with just your hooks and headlines and get recipients to open the email – you will do great with emails. Make sure to educate yourself on spam words to avoid writing spammy emails and ending up in the Spam box of your subscribers.
